Eye bags are a major concern among men and women and their stubbornness to leave can really be nerve-racking. While some women have the option of concealing them with makeup, it can be really exhausting and what about the men? What’s even more frustrating are the wrinkles and dark circles that come with them probably due to shadows or a pool of blood under a very thin skin layer. Whichever way you try to justify it, under eye bags can make you appear older than you actually are. But slow down, this is not an uncommon occurrence so you’re not cursed.
Let’s examine how under eye bags naturally occur.
Since it’s natural for the skin to lose elasticity with age, and for our muscles and tissues to weaken, the eyelids therefore cannot be exempt. I always ask why the face feels the most impact from aging or stress. The answer is quite simple – sun exposure! The face (as fragile as it is) is actually the first place in our bodies that the sun kisses, so, it’s not uncommon for our fragile eyelids to decline over time, announcing to the world that ‘age has come to take its place’. More so, because sun exposure can cause an overproduction of melanin, pigmentation can occur around the eyes which may contribute to dark circles. So you see? It’s quite natural for your skin to sag in those areas since you’re naturally losing the collagen it needs to hold everything underneath in place, including tissues, fat and blood vessels. Thus, the wrinkles, awkward bulge and dark circles, making you look tired, stressed, old, or sometimes, giving you the appearance of someone who was in an ugly fist fight!
Additionally, apart from age related and other natural causes, one or more of these reasons could be why you’re experiencing eye bags and dark circles.
- Genetics
I know some people born with it. What a cross to carry! Some persons inherently have puffy eyes and as they age, it get worse and become more evident with dark circles especially with every stressful event, or medical condition.
- Allergic reactions
As soon as your body is reacting to any substance or environment, it releases histamines which makes matters worse for your eyes. Histamines dilate your blood vessels so that they are extremely conspicuous under the skin. More so, it causes additional problems for the eyes, such as, dryness, swelling, redness and itching, and itching will encourage you to scratch and make the condition even more unpleasant. When you scratch the eyes, you can inflame and burst those blood vessels which will leave behind some purple-colored bags.
- Stress and fatigue
Not enough sleep and too much sleep can cause eye bags. Eye bags and dark circles can also be stress related. When you deprive your body of adequate sleep, or perhaps you overstrained your eyes while watching TV, scrolling on your phone or working on your computer, the result is that the blood vessels around your eyes is dilated, and your skin is thin and pale. Consequently, the blood vessels under the skin become quite apparent. More so, because your eyes are tired, in a bid to cope, it accumulates fluid under your eyes causing eye bags to form beneath the eyes.
Other causes include water retention and diet (too much salt).
So, how can a laser surgery help?
First things first, like I always say, a consultation is in order to determine if a laser surgery applies in your case. However, on a general note, a laser surgery cannot help every case of puffiness beneath the eyes. This is because, there are different degrees of eye bags as well as different causes. More so, not all cases have associated dark circles.
Essentially, a laser surgery for eye bags works to tighten the skin around the eyelids, and as the skin of that area resurfaces, the appearance of the eyelids significantly improves. Laser treatment is an advanced technology that has become quite popular due to its effectiveness in treating eye bags. Additionally, laser surgery has different levels of treatment for different levels of impact; ‘deep laser resurfacing’, used for more advanced, long-lasting and dramatic results, and ‘light laser resurfacing’, used to improve the eyelid appearance producing less dramatic and short-lived results.
Unfortunately, laser surgery does not apply to all eye bag cases. You can undergo any of the two degrees of laser surgery treatment for eye bags if you have deep eye bags, or medium fluid retention. However, cases of deep fluid retention require corrective surgery where incisions will be made. Similarly, minor puffiness do not require a laser surgery since it can be easily eliminated by fillers. Thus, the importance of consulting with an expert to determine what kind of treatment applies in your case.
