It might just be every girl’s worst nightmare: discovering your partner in bed with your best friend. It’s a situation where you inevitably lose the love of your life as well as the friend you’d go to for comfort. The thought of it alone can send some into a panic, and yet, it’s a lot more common than people want to believe.
Studies show that men are more likely to cheat with someone who is close to them or their girlfriends. To make matters worse, men are more likely to find people in close proximity to them more attractive than total strangers.
Most of us want to believe that our guys would never do that to us, but once in a while, you might end up with a partner who is more interested in your BFF than you. Worried about this being the reality? These warning signs indicate that it could be time to head to Splitsville.
- He can’t stop talking about her. When a girl is on a guy’s mind, he’ll talk about her. He won’t even notice how much he’s gabbing, either. If he constantly is mentioning your friend, it’s quite possible that he has a crush on her. Some guys might try to hide it by talking about how much he dislikes her, but don’t be fooled. It’s their way of trying to hide their true feelings.
- It feels like he’s flaunting his boyfriend skills whenever he’s around her. Does he play up how romantic he is with you when she’s nearby? Does it always seem like he’s talking himself up? Watch out! This is his way of trying to gain her interest.
- You’ve caught him checking her out. Guys are fairly obvious when they’re checking out girls, and even those who are sly about it aren’t that subtle. A casual glance might not mean much, but if he’s straight up gawking at her, you should be worried.
- He’s gotten very close to her. When the two of them hit it off, it might’ve been a relief to you. He usually seems disinterested in your friends. But lately, they started to hang out and talk a lot more than usual. If he’s starting to hang out with her without you, he might be putting the moves on her.
- He always is happy to see you hang out with her. Here’s a really squicky sign he might be interested in your BFF: he wants you to get even closer with her. A lot of men who have affairs try to normalize it by getting you to see her as a “part of the family.” Sick, right?
- You’ve caught him browsing her social media profile. If you notice this sign, you should get really concerned. At this point, he’s thirsty enough to Facebook stalk her and that doesn’t bode well for your relationship.
- When she’s around, he’s always offering her food and cleaning the house. Guys who are interested in girls will bend over backwards to please them, even with tiny gestures like making food.
- He jokes about her being “the other girlfriend.” This is a red flag that’s bigger than China’s. There’s often a grain of truth to jokes, and this joke is not a laughing matter. Most guys who say something like this have already crossed the line into affair territory.
- After the three of you all hang out, he can’t keep his hands off you. Does it seem like hanging out with her acts like an aphrodisiac? If so, you might want to keep your guard up a little. While it could just be that he feels invigorated from hanging out, it could be something else, too.
- He can’t stand any of the guys she dates. This may be warranted if the guys she dates are terrible, but if they seem like stand up people, you have a right to be concerned. It could be a sign of jealousy.
- He’s made an effort to meet her family. Think about the last time you’ve ever seen your guy excited to meet a person’s family members. Chances are, it was with you. Men don’t go out of their way to meet a girl’s parents unless there is serious interest in her.
- You can’t shake that nagging feeling that something is wrong. Does something feel “off” when you are hanging out with the two of them? Is it a vibe that just makes you a little sick to your stomach? In many cases, your intuition can pick up on things that aren’t initially visible to us. You might want to go with your gut.
- He called you by her name. Yikes! If this happened while she’s not around, that’s a pretty terrible sign. This is a moment where you might want to hit pause and talk to him about his feelings toward her. If he calls you by her name in bed, well, that can be reason enough to suspect an affair.
- You’ve been seeing less of him. Men who are interested in a girl who’s not their girlfriend have a tendency to put their main piece on the backburner. He might start to act distant, cool, or even skip out on dates. If you notice your friend doing the same, it’s likely they are seeing each other.
- His body language towards her worries you. Does he put his hand on her leg? Is he super touchy with her, or does he face her more than he does you? Only 30 percent of all communication is verbal. If his nonverbal communication with her starts to resemble something romantic, you may be in trouble.
- Your friend has approached you about inappropriate behavior from him. If this happens, we’ve got some good news and bad news. The bad news is that he has a crush on your friend and that he tried to cheat. The good news is that your BFF is a true, blue friend. Act accordingly.
He admitted he has feelings for her. The bad news is that you can no longer deny that he is interested in your BFF. The good news is that his confession shows he wants to work things out. With a little space and counseling, he’ll be able to beat his attraction soon enough.
