Are you washing you face the correct way? Many people would probably answer “Yes,” but the truth is there are many people who have no idea how to wash their face correctly. When you go out in public, your face is the first thing people will see, so you want to make sure your skin is clean and clear at all times. Keeping your skin looking healthy involves more than rinsing your face with a little bit of soap and water once a day. If you want to prevent breakouts and keep your skin healthy, there are certain steps you want to follow.

Here’s how to wash your face the correct way and keep your skin glowing and healthy.

Step 1: Use lukewarm water

When washing your face you want to be sure you are using lukewarm water. People may not be aware of this, but warm water works great to lift dirt and impurities from out of your pores. Before applying your cleanser, you will want to wet your face with lukewarm water to ready the skin. Be sure it is not too hot because hot water can dry out your skin.

Step 4: Use a cleanser

After wetting your face with lukewarm water, you will want to apply your cleanser. There are people who use a traditional soap and a little bit of water, but hand soaps and body soaps may dry out the face. The best type of cleanser you can use is a cream cleanser. Cream cleansers are hydrating, which is what you want because dry skin is not a good thing. If you are a makeup wearer, you will want to use a gel cleanser or try makeup remover before you wash your face.

Step 3: Apply a toner

This particular step is one that most people skip or don’t know about at all. After cleansing and drying your face, you want to apply a toner. Toner can help your skin, especially if your t-zone is oily. Oils on your skin can cause you to break up, so anything you can do to reduce the build up will help. Simply soak a cotton ball in your toner and apply all over your face.

Step 4: Moisturize

Moisturizing is very important. Not only do you want to make sure your skin is hydrated during the dry, winter months, you want to hydrate your skin all year round. It is best to apply a moisturizer at night and in the morning after washing your face. You want to be sure that the moisturizer you are using has a SPF so your skin is not damaged by the sun.

Step 5: Repeat

Washing your face once a day isn’t going to help keep your skin healthy. You want to wash your face in the morning and at night, making sure to complete steps 1 through 4 every time you wash your face. Your skin can accumulate dirt and oils during the day, so washing your face at night will clear away dirt and oils that have built up throughout the day.
