You’ve jumped on the selfie bandwagon, have you? You’re selfieing everywhere! You selfie at home, in the backseat of the car, you selfie when you’re shopping, eating, running, and standing in line at the store. Are you nuts?!
Maybe not.
There’s something unique to today’s world. There’s a message you’re relaying when you take a selfie and post it to your social sites, or send it to your friends. We interact differently than we used to.
We don’t always stop by that friend’s house and pick them up, dragging them away from whatever they were doing, to allow them the privilege of sharing our activities with us. We now have the ability to share some of those activities online.

That doesn’t mean we don’t spend ANY time with our friends and loved ones. But there are more options now. We can include them in different ways. And we can put a face to that experience, which makes it all the more personable.
That’s why selfies are contagious.
People used to think the old way. They used to think that someone who was obsessed with taking photos of themselves was all stuck up. Well, maybe that was true back then, but it couldn’t be farther from the truth now.
Now, if you don’t add a selfie, or some other pic to your status update when you’re telling everyone how great it was to be at the zoo with little Michael, or how white your swimsuit line is next to your sunburn, your leaving them in the dark. It’s true! Selfies give us a greater opportunity to share with those who couldn’t come because they may live too far away, or they had to work, or whatever. Some of our friends we’ve never even met outside of our social sites. But we feel like we know them because we’ve shared so many of their experiences with them through their own selfies!
That’s what makes selfies so great!
If you’re a food connoisseur, a lot of your selfies are going to be around food. Some of your selfies might be the meal itself! And that’s okay! Because you know what? You’ll be drawing other food connoisseurs to your circle through the pictures you take and the posts you share.
Like books? Well did you know that a lot of great authors draw in followers by posting pictures of themselves holding their books in their profile page? That’s right! They took a selfie with their books and opened the floodgates to fame!

Selfies communicate all kinds of things about us. And it’s these very things that allow people to get to know who we are and what we’re about. They see what we’re doing. Experience our surroundings through the selfies we take. Oh, sure, it’s not the same as being there. True.
But there are all kinds of levels of friendship now. And, to tell the truth, I’d much rather look at selfies from a hunting trip, than to be out there with them fighting off the bugs and mosquitoes, and wringing with sweat, and then having to gut that big buck after all that nastiness of waiting for him to show up. Heck yeah! Just give me the selfie! I’ll cheer you on.
Selfies are a vital part of our culture now. They are the meme to our lives. They are our connection to others, the hidden portal that allows people we’ve never met to get to know us. We are social creatures. And we will forever find new and wondrous ways to express our need for social interaction.
